How do I…

Get started

  • Install it or not: download the app for Mac, Windows or Linux, or open Confab in your browser. Both sign in to the same account.
  • Sign in with a QR code: on the sign-in screen, scan the code with your phone or open its link on a device where you are signed in, then approve.

Using Confab

  • Give it a job: start a new chat. Ask for a plan, a search, a document or a fix. It shows its plan and every step as it goes.
  • Agent and Plan: in the message box (on a phone, under +). Agent does the work now. Plan researches first and writes a plan; steer it, then have Confab build it.
  • Models: Qwen3.8 27B from Alibaba is the default. Gemma 4 26B from Google and gpt-oss-20b from OpenAI are in the model picker too. All three are open models that Confab runs on its own machines.
  • Credits and plans: everyone gets 300 credits every day, back at midnight UTC. A chat uses credits by its length; pictures, film clips, music and a new website take set amounts (see Pricing). Plus, Pro and Max add credits every month: pick one in Settings, Plans & credits, where you can also see what you have left and cancel.
  • Your own models: with the add-on, open Settings, Your models, and give the address of your server (anything with an OpenAI-style API, such as Ollama or vLLM) and its key. Confab checks it answers, then its models are in the model picker as Your server. It has to be reachable from the internet, and chats on it use no credits.
  • Web search and its browser: Confab searches the web when it needs to, and can open pages in its own browser while you watch.
  • Talk to it: the microphone types what you say. The voice button beside it starts a conversation: Confab listens and answers out loud until you end it.
  • Work on a server: ask Confab to ssh into it, giving your username and the server’s address. The first time it gives you one line to paste there, then it connects with its own key. It never needs your password. Ask it to forget the machine to cut it off.
  • Let it edit your files: in a chat, Folder, pick one folder. Each change is a card you can open: preview, code, diff.
  • Let it use your computer: in a chat, Computer. An orange frame and a Stop button appear while it works. It takes pictures of your screen to see what is there and uses your mouse and keyboard, and each step in the chat shows the picture and where it clicked. Confab's own window and any sign-in, password or security window are blacked out of the pictures and never touched, and with Ask first it asks before it sends, saves or deletes anything. Only you can see the pictures; deleting the chat deletes them. Press Esc to stop it at any time.
  • Use your computer from your phone: on the computer, open Settings, Use from your phone, switch it on and choose what Confab may use there (its screen, some folders). Then, chatting on your phone or in a browser, open Tools and access and pick that computer. Confab has to be running on it (the tray is fine); anything that sends, saves or deletes asks you on your phone first, and Esc or Stop on the computer ends it.
  • Memory: what Confab remembers about you is under Memory in the sidebar. Forget any line, or switch it off in Settings.
  • Sessions and Creations: Sessions shows every chat as running, to review or done. Creations keeps the files and things Confab made for you.

Account and safety

  • Two-factor authentication: Settings → My account → Two-factor authentication → Turn on. Scan with an authenticator app and keep the backup codes.
  • Lost your phone: sign in with a backup code, then turn two-factor off and on again with the new phone.
  • Change your avatar or banner: Settings → Profile. PNG, JPEG, GIF and WebP work, animated ones too.
  • Delete your account: Settings → My account → Delete account. It deletes your account and its data for good.
  • Report something: email [email protected] with what happened and where. Safety explains what happens next.
