Terms of Service

The agreement for using Confab, in plain words. By using Confab, you agree to it.

Last updated 31 October 2026.

Who we are

These terms are the agreement between you and the team that runs Confab ("we" or "us"). They cover the Confab apps for Mac, Windows, Linux and iPhone, Confab in the browser at app.confab.im, the Confab API and Console, and this website.

The Privacy Policy explains what we do with your data, and Safety explains how Confab is kept safe. You can reach us at [email protected].

Who can use Confab

You need to be 13 or older, or older if the law where you live says so. If you are under 18, you need a parent or guardian's OK, and they should read these terms with you.

Claude, the model from Anthropic, is for people 18 and over when Confab offers it.

You can't use Confab if we have closed an account of yours for breaking these terms, or if the law doesn't allow you to.

Your account

Keep your password and backup codes to yourself, and turn on two-factor authentication. An account is for one person: don't share it or sell it. You are responsible for what happens under your account, so if you think someone else has got in, change your password and email us straight away.

Confab is AI

Confab is an AI assistant. What it writes, says, designs and draws is made by AI models: open models from Alibaba (Qwen), Google (Gemma) and OpenAI (gpt-oss) and Confab Image, which we run on our own machines, and Claude, made by Anthropic, when Confab offers it and you pick it.

AI can be wrong, out of date or incomplete, even when it sounds sure. Check anything that matters before you rely on it. Confab is not a doctor, lawyer, financial adviser or any other professional, and what it says is not professional advice.

Don't use Confab on its own to make decisions that seriously affect people, such as about jobs, money, housing, insurance, health, education or the law. A qualified person has to check those decisions, and the people affected should be told that AI was involved.

Letting Confab act for you

Confab can use your computer, work in a folder you share, browse the web in its own browser and run commands on servers you connect, within the permissions you give it. Esc or Stop stops it at any time.

With Ask first, Confab checks with you before each command and before it sends, saves, deletes or pays for anything. With Full access, it gets on with the work without asking each time, but it still asks before it pays for anything or runs a command that could wipe data. When you say yes to something, it is your action, as if you had done it yourself.

Web pages, emails and files can hide instructions written to trick AI. Confab treats what it reads as information, not orders, but no protection is perfect. Give it only the access a task needs, use Ask first for anything sensitive, review its changes before you keep them, and keep backups of anything you can't afford to lose.

Only connect computers, folders, accounts and servers that are yours, or that you have permission to use.

Your content

What you put into Confab, such as your messages, files and pictures, stays yours. So does what Confab makes for you: any rights we have in it, we give to you. You give us permission to store, process and show your content as needed to run Confab for you and the people you share it with, and to keep Confab safe. That permission ends when you delete the content or your account, apart from copies the law requires us to keep.

We don't use your chats, files, pictures or designs to train AI models, ours or anyone else's.

Only put in what you have the right to use. AI can make similar things for different people, and what it makes can look like existing work, so check before you publish or sell it. If you publish realistic pictures, video or audio that Confab made of real people, places or events, say they were made with AI.

Sharing

You can add people you're connected with to a Work chat as editors or viewers, and make view-only links to your designs. Anyone with a link can see that design, so share links with care and switch a link off in Share when you're done. In a shared chat, changes an editor asks for wait for the owner's OK before they reach the owner's folder. The owner can remove people, and anyone can leave.

What you can't do with Confab

Don't use Confab, or anything it makes, for any of these:

  • anything sexual involving children, or anything that puts a child at risk (we report it);
  • sexually explicit content (Confab is used by people from 13);
  • intimate or sexual pictures, video or audio of real people, real or faked, without their consent;
  • making or getting weapons, explosives, or anything that can cause mass harm;
  • terrorism or violent extremism, threats, or encouraging violence;
  • encouraging suicide, self-harm or eating disorders;
  • attacking people for their race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation or similar;
  • harassing, bullying, stalking or doxxing anyone;
  • watching, tracking or profiling people without their consent, including recognising them from their face or guessing private things about them, such as their health, religion or sexuality;
  • malware, or breaking into or attacking accounts, computers or servers you don't own or have permission to test;
  • scams, fraud, phishing or spam, or pretending to be a real person or organisation to mislead people;
  • deceiving people at scale, such as fake reviews, fake accounts, coordinated campaigns, or misleading people about elections or how to vote;
  • selling or getting illegal goods or services, or anything else that's illegal;
  • breaking other people's rights, such as copyright, trademarks or privacy.

Also don't: try to get Confab to break these rules, get round its limits or safety checks, or reveal its private instructions; hide instructions in pages or files to take over someone else's Confab; copy, resell, reverse engineer or interfere with Confab; test it for weaknesses without our written OK (to report one, see Safety); reach it with bots or scripts except through the Confab API; or use what it makes to train an AI model that competes with Confab or with Anthropic.

When you use Claude in Confab, you also have to follow Anthropic's Usage Policy.

Illegal content and how we deal with it

Terrorist content, child sexual abuse and exploitation, and any other illegal content are not allowed on Confab. When we find it, or someone reports it, we take it down quickly.

To find it, we use automatic checks:

  • Every message to Confab, and every answer as it is written, whichever model writes it, goes through fixed rules that stop anything sexual involving children. A question that breaks them never reaches the model, and an answer that breaks them is stopped and removed.
  • Requests for pictures go through stricter fixed rules and an AI classifier, any picture you give Confab to work from is checked before it is used, and every picture Confab makes is checked for nudity before anyone sees it. If a check can't run, no picture is made.
  • The AI models in Confab are also told to refuse sexually explicit content and anything that helps seriously hurt people.

Refused requests are logged with a short excerpt so our team can review them, and repeated refusals pause picture making for a day. People on our team review reports and refusals. For illegal content, or anything else that breaks these terms, we remove the content, warn you, pause features, restrict or close the account, or ban the person from Confab, depending on how serious it is. Where it's safe and legal, we tell you what we did and why. We report child sexual abuse and threats to someone's life to the police or the National Crime Agency.

To report something, email [email protected] with what you saw and where. If someone is in immediate danger, call 999 or your local emergency number first.

Complaints and appeals

Email [email protected] if:

  • you want to report content or someone's behaviour;
  • you think we got a decision wrong, such as removing your content, pausing a feature or closing your account;
  • you think our automatic checks treated you unfairly or didn't work the way these terms say;
  • you think we haven't followed these terms or the law on online safety.

A person on our team reads every complaint. We aim to reply within 7 days, and sooner when it's urgent. If we got it wrong, we put things back: we restore content, lift a pause or reopen an account. Complaining doesn't affect your legal rights, and if you think we removed your content or restricted your account in breach of these terms, you can take legal action against us for breach of contract.

The Confab API

The Confab API and Console let you use Confab's chat model and Confab Image from your own code. They are free while in beta, within the rate limits shown in the Console. The beta can change, and we will tell you in the Console before paid pricing starts.

Keep your API keys secret: anyone with a key can use it on your account, and you are responsible for what's done with it. We show each key once and keep only a fingerprint of it. Rotate or delete a key in the Console if it leaks.

If you build something with the API, you are responsible for it and for following the law where you offer it. That includes telling people when they are talking to AI, labelling AI-made pictures, video, audio and text where the law requires it, having a qualified person check any decision that seriously affects people, and making sure the people using what you build follow the rules in these terms. The same safety checks run on the API as in the app.

We keep a record of each request for 30 days, the words of requests and answers for 7 days, and pictures for 24 hours, so you can see them in Logs and we can keep the API safe.

Ending things

You can stop using Confab whenever you like. Settings › My account › Delete account deletes your account and its data for good.

We can pause or close your account if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, if the law requires it, or to protect people. Where it's safe and legal, we tell you why and how to appeal. If we decide to close Confab altogether, we will tell you in the app at least 30 days before, so you have time to save what you need, and refund unused credit.

Our responsibility to you

We work hard to keep Confab running, safe and useful, but we can't promise it will always be available, free of mistakes or right. We may change Confab as we improve it.

If you use Confab as a consumer, the law gives you rights when services and digital content are not as described, are faulty, or are not provided with reasonable care and skill. Nothing in these terms takes those rights away.

We are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of us breaking these terms or not using reasonable care and skill. We are not responsible for loss that wasn't foreseeable, for things outside our reasonable control, or for what other people post or share. If you use Confab for a business, we are not responsible for lost profits, revenue or business opportunities, and our total responsibility to you is limited to £100 or what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, whichever is more.

We don't limit our responsibility for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law doesn't allow us to limit.

Changes to these terms

We update these terms as Confab and the law change. If a change matters, we tell you in the app at least 14 days before it takes effect, unless the law or people's safety needs it sooner. If you don't agree with a change, you can stop using Confab, and we refund your unused credit.

The law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and claims can be brought in the courts of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring claims in your local courts. If you live in another country, you keep the protection of its consumer law.
